Types of Unemployment

Frictional Unemployment

Frictionally unemployed people are between jobs or just entering or reentering the labor market. At any given time 2 or 3 percent of the labor force is frictionally unemployed. These people include students who are looking for their first full-time jobs, women who are reentering the labor market, and recently discharged members of the armed services. Those who get fired or leave their jobs voluntarily and are searching for better jobs are also classified as frictionally unemployed. Add to these the people who get fired, quit, or are just plumb unhappy, and decide to make a fresh start somewhere else. These people, too, are between jobs, or frictionally unemployed.
